Blue Room

Blue Room

Decorating Tips

  • An inexpensive way to give a canopy look without the heavy feel of a canopy bed. Often a child's room is too small to carry off a large canopy bed---but your kids love the look. The solution: rods are afixed to the ceiling and to both sides of the walls. Sheer white fabric is draped through the rods and puddled on the floor.
  • Paint your walls and use white as the unifying color. Your room will pull together quickly.

Decorating Tips

  • Quick trick using fabric. Here different cotton print fabrics are overlayed on a square piece of wood covered in a thin layer of batting. Pull the fabric tightly and staple. Contrasting ribbon is criss crossed and a button has been attached.
  • This great piece of wall art does not match the bed covering but picks up the pastel colors of the bedding. Three small pillows, however, were made that carry those colors over to the bed

On Safari Room
More On Safari Room

Decorating Tips

  • A little more complicated but so worth it!
  • The room is painted in 3 rustic colors. The mountains rise and fall with easy to paint peaks. By using masking tape you will get crisp lines.
  • The 7 jeeps are placed throughout the room---some large and some smaller.
  • The jeeps are made of hard wood, cut out and painted. The hardwood is very inexpensive-two or three dollars for a very large piece. The hardwood is like peg board, very thin---but without the holes---about 1/8" thick!
  • Project an image onto the hardwood, trace the image and then cut out with a jig saw. The jeeps are tacked to the wall with small nails.
  • The painting is actually very primitive---it is not exact, so do worry if you are not an artist.
  • Trees and bushes have been added for some height and added dimension.

  • Consider our Fairy Tales Do Come True Signs on the Princess page.

Decorating Tips

  • By adding a ribbon and bow (with center flower), the picture becomes visually more important.
  • Coordinating quilt used as a table topper.
  • You can't quite tell but a sconce has been added to either side of the bed. To hide the unsightly cords, coordinating fabric and ribbon have been tied around the cord. A great trick when a room has not been pre-wired.
  • When you put accessories on a table top, remember the rule of 3's or 5's. Here they used a photo frame, greenery, and a small glass clock.

Girls Room

Decorating Tips

  • How simple!
  • The room is painted so you see the striking color contrast. You don't want white walls and white rods.
  • These simple and inexpensive rods were painted white to match the other accessories in the room. Small bracelets, watches and key chains were added
  • The rods are about 18" and the spacing is about 6". Visually you have filled up wall space with very personal treasures.

Tropical Room

Decorating Tips

  • A solid color coverlet is used rather than the tropical pattern---it makes the room less busy. The pattern is picked up in the dust ruffle and pillows.
  • Two garden flamingos were mounted on a board and the board was painted white.
  • Inexpensive stuffed animals complete the look.

Yellow Princess

Decorating Tips

  • Wallpaper is making a comeback. The upper 2/3 of the wall is wallpaper and the bottom is in a matching yellow---white bead board trim separates the two.
  • The trick is to create visual impact. Flower wall pegs are used with princess boas, necklaces, hats, and veils. These same pegs can be found on our pegs page.

Frame With Ribbon

  • Consider using our pink or shabby chic white scalloped frames and weave a dramatic ribbon for a similar effect.
  • Find our frames on the Chef page. Available in shabby chic white and pink.

Decorating Tips

  • Take a ribbon and weave it through a frame. The ribbon makes the frame pop and it becomes much more significant on the wall.

Train Room

Train Room

Decorating Tips

  • We wanted to offer this railroad crossing sign, but the fact of the matter is, it is just too EASY to make yourself---and costs under $15.00.
  • Go to a home store and buy 2 pieces of wooden fencing, these slats were about 4" wide. One slat becomes the vertical anchor. The other piece is cut to make the 2 cross pieces.
  • Paint the pieces in a couple of shades of brown/grey, that will give it more depth. Once it has dried, distress the slats further with a little white paint. Remember the distressing should be subtle and not harsh, smudge and wipe as you go to give it an aged look.
  • Stencil the word CROSSING on one cross piece and RAIL ROAD on the other cross piece. Leave space between the word RAIL and the word ROAD so it will align properly.
  • Layer the three pieces of wood and screw together.
  • Don't forget the details---paint the screws---you don't want shiny silver screws.

Decorating Tips

  • The painting technique in this room was wonderful. A linen technique was used so the paint is not a flat blue. Small lines, in a slightly darker blue, simulate stitching and ran vertically around the room. Other small handpainted lines ran vertically, every five feet---again to simulate denim stitching.
  • A plain denim comforter is used with pillows in coordinating fabics. If you can't find a denim comforter go to your fabric store and you can sew your own denim duvet cover--it's only four straight seams!

Dance

Garden Trellis Room

Decorating Tips

  • Use what you have for your dance room. Here a tutu and hair scrunchie and ballet shoes were used in a shadow box.
  • Soccer shirts, baseball or football jerseys are also candidates for the shadow box-and nothing is more personal that using their things.

Decorating Tips

  • There are several things that we like about this room.
  • First, inexpensive solid color bedding is used and mixed with floral and solid color pillows.
  • Three very inexpensive plates are used over the twin bed. In our photo archive we have several rooms, where plates have been used very effectively.
  • A shade slightly lighter than the bedding is used on the walls---not the exact color.
  • A garden trellis from the home store was used and decorated with a lilac floral vine.

Decorating Tips

  • Diamond squares inside the circles were made of felt and glued in the center.
  • Use a fine point paint brush to connect a vertical line between the circles. It appears that the circles are floating from the ceiling.
